What a day it was yesterday....
5 am It started off as usual with me waking up early at 5 to enjoy my cuppa before the whole chaotic routine of preparing school lunches and breakfast and then waking up my kids starts. Girls are vegetarians and there aren't many veg options in school. Surprising though when the whole world is shifting towards clean eating, I feel Singapore is still in ancient times. Surprising too when Ranya , my older 14 year old said - 'My friends don't think it is cool to be a vegetarian !' Mindsets have yet to change. And people gotta stop putting dried shrimps in everything!! Seriously, you just gotta stop.
7 am While dropping my younger girl Riya off in her school, I witnessed so many acts of love...
A dad hugging his little girl so tightly while the girl nonchalantly pushes him away and waves him off. She gets lost in her conversation with her friend while dad watches her longingly...he will be missing her for the next 6 hours.
A little boy gets off from his car while sneezing and waves to his parents. Many waves and then the car moves away....mom who is sitting at the back looks back to see if he is alright. will he able to manage his heavy bag? Is his sneezing leading up to aomething? Thoughts of every concerned mother.
Another mom who cycles her daughter to school everyday without fail - with the heavy bag at the front and her daughter seated precariously behind -reaches school. She sighs heavily - probably relieved she made it in time and safely too. She told me she cooks for her daughter early every morning so that on days when she has extra lessons she will have her lunch already made by 7 !! Amazing sacrifice and truly an act of love. I can't imagine doing that.
730am Returning home, Ranya, who gets to go to school later on Wednesdays, wakes up late. Realising she won't make it in time if she goes by her usual 2 buses routine, we decide to take a cab. I tagged along as I had errands to run near her school.
815am Darn!! Of all days, no cabs available - even when we tried booking for one. We decided to take a bus in the opposite direction and hopefully catch a cab somewhere there. Boarded bus no 10 and saw another girl from TJC - Ranya's school. Saw that she was planning to get down and walk to school. We followed her thinking she should know better - she must have taken this route many times before.
820am - 9 minutes to school bell!! We walked briskly and we jogged to school. The girl in the bus got left behind. She must have been wondering why we are rushing when we are just 5 mins away. Ranya carrying a heavy bag whilst jogging worked out a good sweat. Timing wasn't good- not when she'll be standing in close contact with a thousand other students during assembly. Hopefully a fly doesn't get attracted to her perspiration!!
827 am - Ranya made it!! Saved by a mere 2 minutes!! Oh gosh, with perspiration trickling down my neck and back and my face glistening, I thought to myself - what a day!! It's only 830 and I felt like I have gone through a whole week!! Catching my breath and longing for a big gulp of cold water, I get a text from Ranya - Mom! I forgot my sports bra. Could you bring it over around 920? Oh boy Oh boy....
9am - finished my errands and took a cab home to get the sports bra and hopefully return to TJC in the same cab. Cab driver starts talking and when I told him he doesn't look like 40, he asks me out for coffee. Yikes!! what have I unleashed? Told him I am not interested and that I am married. His reply ? 'So what ? So am I!' Okay this is new and can't believe this is happening in Singapore. I cooly changed the topic to the weather
920am - Passed the sports bra to Ranya. Headed home hoping that nothing else would happen to shake my usually calm quiet mornings.
2pm - Starts raining out of the blue. Will i get a cab this time? Fortunately I did. Brought Ranya for her French readiness test in Bishan. Don't understand the reasoning for this test. The whole point of Ranya taking a foreign lang is to learn that lang. Why a readiness test to see if she 'ready' for French? And what are they trying to do by setting the whole paper in French? How would some one who is new to French understand the questions? Ridiculous. Had an issue when the teachers didnt allow Ranya to leave at 4. Ranya handled it independently and we headed back to TJC.
430pm - Reached TJC just in time for rehearsal for Ranya's TJC Got Talent - a school talent contest. They did a short sound check for everyone but asked Ranya to sing the whole song! Felt very proud of my girl. A fellow school girl sitting in the audience went up to her and said you sing so movingly - it makes me want to cry' Awww so sweet.... Caught an older teen guy stealing a look at Ranya. Hmmmm- what have we here?
630pm - In school for Ranya 's talent competition. Close friends Nisha, her son Omar, Angie and Jenny came to support Ranya. Thank you so much for making an effort on a weekday night...Love you guys :)
930pm Ranya sang beautifully but at the end of the day, popularity won. It is important to have a big group of friends when your winning is based on talent and voting. But she had a good experience. Teachers came over to compliment on her singing - Ranya's LA teacher said - omg your voice is beautiful. I could listen to it the whole day! Ranya was beaming. Riya went up to give her flowers - thanks babe. So proud of you to have done that without any hesitation when i asked you to :)
10pm Reached home. Feet aching after trying to stand tall with high heels - serves me right for trying to act cool! Served leftovers from the previous day for dinner - sorry girls. It's not everyday. Loaded the dishwasher, wiped the kitchen counters and closed all windows and sliding doors. Cleared the house and put things away. Can't go to sleep knowing there is a big pile of stuff lying dissaray in the living room.
11pm - Removed my make up and showered. When my body hit the bed- i sighed so heavily and deeply. Oh man ...It felt so good - better than an O (Sorry Anand)!! Nothing like a soft comfortable bed after a terribly exhausting day. Did a silent prayer that tomorrow I will have a quiet calm smooth day.... Slowly drifted off to sleep thinking what a day it had been - Please God - let me not go through another 20th April again!
My home is
usually in a mess and has dust settled on almost everything. But I believe laughter and love will win the day. In 20 years, my girls won't remember how messy the house was but will remember the time we spent together and the love they felt...
