Yummiest Apple Crumble

Using fruits for desserts is an ingenious way to incorporate the goodness of fruits into what everyone loves - Desserts!

I hv made this yummy Apple Crumble many times in Singapore. It is one of Anand, my husband's favorite desserts. He doesn't take whole eggs and avoids butter or cream for health reasons. So I had to use a light canola butter that doesn't hv the full calories of the real butter. It doesn't work well with liquid oil.

Ingredients ( Serves 4)

For the Filling

4 Granny Smith Apples peeled, cored and cut into wedges. ( See Note 1)

4,tbsps plain flour

1/2 tsp cinnamon powder

1/2 cup brown sugar

For the Crumble

1/2 cup plain flour

1/2 cup brown sugar

1/3 cup cold light butter

1/2 tsp cinnamon powder

1/3 cup sliced almonds

To make the Filling

Preheat the oven to 350 deg F ( 180 deg C )

Butter a glass oven dish ( Anchor/ Pyrex)

Mix together plain flour, brown sugar, cinnamon powder and lemon peel, sprinkle the apple slices with this flour and spice mixture. Mix till the slices are well coated.

Spoon the filling into the prepared dish.

To make the Crumble

Mix flour, sugar and cinnamon powder in another bowl. Put cold butter into this flour mixture. Using a knife or a pastry cutter cut the butter into the flour mixture till it resembles big bread crumbs. ( See Note 2)

Mix in the almond slices.

Final Steps

Sprinkle crumble topping over the apple slices in the baking dish.

Bake in oven for at least 40 mins till the topping is brown and crispy.

Serve warm with a sprinkle of icing sugar. For a decadent treat, serve Apple Crumble with a scoop of ice cream of your choice.

Note :

1)To prevent Apple slices from browning, drop them into a bowl of salted water. Lemon juice works well too but it makes the apples more tart.

2)When mixing the crumble, cut through the mixture lightly to ensure light crumbs instead of hard ones when baked.
