High fructose corn syrup ( HFCS) is a man made sweetener. It is found in a variety of processed foods from cereals and breads to cookies simply because it is sweeter and cheaper than regular sugar. Purging this poison from your diet is the single best thing you can do for your health.
I wasn't aware about high fructose corn syrup until my husband pointed it out and forbade any food that contained this toxic in our house.
The bad news is in recent years, we have started consuming more and more sugar. The average soda can has 20 oz of sugar all made up of HFCS. But the good news is people are getting aware of the damage that HFCS can do to our health, thus companies like Coca Cola Co have come up with healthier Coke options using cane sugar and stevia.
Here are some reasons why HFCS can kill you according to Dr Mark Hyman, a family physician and NY Times best selling author :
1) Sugar in any form causes obesity and other diseases when consumed in huge doses. Diabetes, obesity, heart disease, cancer and dementia to name a few.
2) HFCS and cane sugar are not identical and are not processed the same way by the body. HFCS is an industrial food product and far from natural. While cane sugar takes a longer time for the body to absorb because it goes thru the digestion process, HFCS can't be digested because of its chemical composition and is rapidly absorbed leading to many diseases. Particularly, fatty liver - a condition which damages the liver and affects 70 million Americans.
3) HFCS contains contaminants like Mercury (!) which are not monitored by the FDA.
4) HFCS is always found in poor quality processed food. If you see it in the ingrdients it is definitely bound to be junk food.
I urge you to go into your kitchen and throw out all the food containing HFCS right now. Cut HFCS forever from your lives. Stick to regular cane sugar, if you must.
