Just 4 tips to keep your waistline in check during this season of festivities. The Chinese New Year (CNY) of the Monkey is just around the corner. It falls on the 8th and 9th of February this year. As you move from one household to another while visiting family, close friends or colleagues, it is easy to pack on the pounds without you so much as realizing it. Follow these smart tips to fight the bulge during this season or during any festive season :
1) Don't Starve !
Have a healthy snack before attending a festive gathering. This could help in you eating in moderation. When you are hungry, you are more likely to overeat. Much on an apple, have a light fruit smoothie or even a small sandwich.
2) Don't Binge!
Those New Year goodies are tempting but many are high in calories. Barbecued pork slices or Bak Kwa, which is a popular CNY treat, has a whopping 370 calories!! You gotta sweat it out jogging for 50 mins to get rid of those calories. The humble mandarin orange has only 50 calories. Make wiser choices when it comes to snacking.
Learn to say no when you are full. Remember don't overeat. The rule of the thumb is to eat up to 80% full. Eating too much oily and 'heaty' foods can lead to indigestion which would stress your digestive system. Have cooling drinks like barley or chrysanthemum nearby. Indulge in fresh fruits and vegetables which would provide you the natural fiber and sugars your body needs.
3) Get Up and Move!
Just because you are in the midst of a celebration does not give you the excuse to miss out on your exercise. Strive to keep up with your exercise regime throughout your festivities. Apart from burning those unwanted calories resting on your hips (or thighs or upper arms or around your belly? ), exercise also helps to relieve the stress and the tiredness from all that visiting. Buddy up to motivate each other to stick to your plan or Jazz up your routine with invigorating music or dance to make it more fun.
4) Rest !
The tiring schedule of non stop visiting and eating can wear you out easily. Inedequate rest may lead to higher blood pressure or cause overeating. Have at least 6-8 hours of sleep every night and stick to your usual sleep pattern.
Keep these smart tips in mind when you make your rounds so as to ensure only your wallet gets heavy:). Happy Chinese New Year guys!! Best wishes for a healthy and prosperous Year of the Monkey.
