Some alternative therapies have shown promise to relieve hot flushes but because they might interact with other medications, it is important to talk to your doctor first before you try any of these products.
Botanical and herbs that might relieve hot flushes include :
1) Soy Products - plant estrogens found in soy products are thought to have estrogen like effects which might help to relieve hot flushes. But it is important to take actual soy products like tofus and soy milk, not supplements.
2) Evening Primrose Oil - this is often used to treat hot flushes but beware there are side effects like nausea and diarrhoea when taking this supplement. Women taking certain medications like blood thinners should not take evening primrose oil as it may increase your risk of bruising or bleeding.
3) Flaxseed - this has no scientific evidence but it is thought to decrease the symptoms of menopause particularly hot flushes.
4) Black Cohosh - for centuries the roots of this Native American plant has been found to relieve the symptoms of menopause. Since the risks of HRT were publicized a decade ago, this has been a popular remedy. Apparently this miracle plant helps to relieve headaches, vaginal dryness, mood swings, hot flushes and night sweats. It is available as a supplement, as tea bags or in its natural form.
